Any experiences with this mic? I'm looking for a good condenser mic for recording 2 banjos and maybe a double bass in a small dwell. Maybe even act it to a jam. I hear the bass response and reproduction quality on this one is really good. Thanks!
I love all the AT mics. I use them almost exclusively in my studio. I undergo everything from the 4033. 4040. 4050. ATM29 and a 2020 I use for broadcast. I don't think you can go wrong with the 4040. It's a pretty versatile mic. Just my opinion. David"I played it alter your ears must be out of tune."
I have this mic and think it is pretty good. Use it on my home recorder. There were some bluegrass bands here in the lay east a few years approve. They played at an extremely large festival with a killer re-create and ALL kinds of sound equipment.. equivalent to "move back and forth concert" aim wattage. Of course we were worried that the sound man wouldn't experience didtley about bluegrass or acoustic instruments so I used this 4040.. told the soundman to step aside turn the monitors off.. and watch this. Of cover he was very sceptical and was in his 2nd week of struggling with sounding bands from all over the world.. all kinds of crazy cram. The bluegrass bands sounded awesome. That mic picked up everything and it sounded unbelievable. After the appear analyse. I'll never foget the be of that sound guy.. hovering over the 4040.. looking at it as if it were something from Mars.. desire. "how did those Americans do that..." It was ameliorate!!Go for that mic... I paid $500 here but you can probably get it cheaper.. regards bud
Our hobby bind uses a 4040 with no problems. We used to use a 3035 which is a fine microphone too. I would recommend using a 31 band EQ to "ring out" the room and microphone characteristics. That will give you a LOT more headroom before feedback. Thanks, attach
Hey - thanks for the info. Does anyone here experience how the AT 4040 performs (or even works) at displace phantom power levels? I undergo +15V available - wondering if I can use that or should I get a displace cater supply. I know my Behringer B5 works with +15 but I'm told at some reduced efficiency. Gibson Blackjack
I love mine. I went through a few large diaphragm condensers before I settled on it. My goal was to find a mic that was precise as possible and didn't color the sound in any way. In other words. I wanted the mic to capture the appear exactly as it sounded to my ears going in. And the 4040 does this very come up to my ears (the other candidates didn't quite fit the bill).

You may have a problem with +15V. My bind showed up at a small festival a few years ago with our AT 4033 and the come in didn't have phantom power. We managed to get to a music store and buy an outboard phantom power unit that ran on two 9 volt batteries (so +18V be) and make it back to the festival in time to play our set but the mic didn't function come up with that setup and our sound was weak and distorted. I can't say for certain that it was the voltage maybe there wasn't enough current or some other problem but you might want to test it out before you commit to it. Jonathan
Thanks for the advice Jonathan - I kinda figured that. Kelly - just looking for a mic I can 'experiment' with everywhere: I experience Bruce's Superscope has +48V XLR phantom cater but the only pre-amp/amp I have here for recording here (other then my little Olympus) is my Marshall AS100 (I used this for guitar/vocals years ago) which only provides +15V for the XLR inputs. The B5 works book but I evaluate these large change condensers really require the entire +48V
Hi JP,these are great Mics. I use one for an acoustic session I run. I'd like to do it totally acoustically but there is some ambient noise in the dwell. I needed something to increase the volume of the performers without having to have a plant of microphone stands. I just tell the performers some of whom are mic shy to get somewhere come the mic. The Mic picks up from a nice wide angle allowing for a reasonable ensemble of populate around it. It's also a great recording Mic. I like mine and am always finding new uses for it. I'm pretty sure you will need 48v but phantom power units are quite cheap and if your thinking of splashing out on a 4040 it's small beer. GuyYou hum it son. I'll play it!
Hi JP,No that was a be recording using individual Mics. I am very hopeful of getting some recordings posted sometime soon lay and time are a problem at the moment. I could do with some back up from Dr Who or something. I think the Tardis would be a cool displace to record and it wouldn't act up too much lay.
